During the last week of the first term, I set out to help a classmate with their own short film project. During this week, he’d written a script and sent it over to one of our tutors. They loved the script and had the idea for us to make it a physical short film and potentially submit it to an upcoming film festival. The classmate came to me and asked for me to lend my help in a directing capacity. I went location scouting and took reference pictures, discussed the concept, and tried to better understand his idea. After a very productive day, I had brought along another classmate to help me in a director of photography (DoP) capacity, aiding me with the cinematography, camera use, lighting, and sound.
During the filming, the weather was terrible and, considering the high prices of the equipment we needed, we had to place a very high focus on maintaining its security and preventing damage. This ended up adding several hours to our filming progress, but managed to successfully record all necessary footage in that given day without incurring any damage. This was my first time getting to work with the BlackMagic camera, a wide-angle lens and the light rod (with all its unique settings for vibrant and varied light options).
